Welcome to the Island Issue.

Ever since the earliest days of SLOP we’ve wanted to do an island issue. Maybe it’s growing up in Britain, an island that is also made up of islands, that gave us the idea. For this issue, we wanted to look further afield, to islands across the world and their relationships to food. While these places are diverse culturally and geographically, we found shared traits across them all: their independence, their pride and their resourcefulness.

The Island Issue has stories from around the globe. From some of the most populated islands in the world, like Hong Kong and Manhattan, to some that are less busy, including Tasmania, Crete and Ilhabela, an archipelago off the coast of São Paulo. There is also the fermented lamb of the Faroe Islands, the historic bottarga production of Sardinia and the bakeries of Mallorca.

Through this issue, we wanted to tell each of these stories, showing how islands shape their produce, and how the produce shapes their culture.

The magazine is still free in shops, but ordering or buying directly helps support what we do and helps to make the magazine sustainable, contributing to the cost of design, printing and, most importantly, paying all of our contributors. Price includes UK postage.
